CANCELED: Dinner Meeting with Andrew Bernstein

March 17 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm

3/10/20 UPDATE:

The San Marino City Club has decided to cancel its March 17, 2020 meeting. Due to the growing concerns regarding COVID-19 and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recommendation that persons over the age of 60 years take steps to self-isolate in order to reduce the risk of contracting this potentially lethal virus, in an abundance of caution, the City Club decided that cancellation of the upcoming City Club meeting was in the best interests of our membership. While the Club was excited to have local resident and NBA Hall of Fame photographer Andrew D. Bernstein as our featured speaker, we will make every effort to reschedule Mr. Bernstein for a later date. The Club has not determined a course of action for future meetings as the information regarding COVID-19 continues to develop. Updates for City Club members regarding the holding of future meetings will be posted to the City Club’s website located at www.sanmarinocityclub.org.

The San Marino City Club is a non-profit civic organization that since 1926 has been dedicated to obtaining for the citizens of the San Marino the best civic, educational and cultural services and facilities possible, and to encouraging and promoting the highest standards of citizenship among its membership.

———-

The featured speaker for the San Marino City Club’s March 17, 2020 meeting is NBA Hall of Fame Photographer and San Marino resident Andrew D. Bernstein! He will be speaking about his career as a sports photographer and how he captures special behind-the-scenes moments. Andy is the Director of Photography for STAPLES Center and Microsoft Theater. Andrew D. Bernstein Associates Photography, Inc. has been responsible for photography of all events at the LA Live complex since its inception in 1999. He is the key photographic contributor to NBA Entertainment’s global media platforms, which include NBA.com, all league publications and NBA licensed products. He has been the team photographer for ten professional home teams which won championships in basketball (Lakers in 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010), baseball (Dodgers in 1988) and hockey (Kings in 2012 and 2014). Bernstein has covered 38 NBA Finals and All-Star Games as the senior NBA photographer.
In 2018, Bernstein collaborated with five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant on the worldwide bestselling book “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play,” a unique look at Bryant’s 20 year career through Bernstein’s lens.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame named Bernstein a 2018 Curt Gowdy award recipient, acknowledging his contributions to basketball media. This prestigious award is presented annually to members of the electronic and print media whose longtime efforts have made a significant contribution to the game of basketball. Bernstein is the second photographer to receive this honor.

Andy received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, his portfolio earned him a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a scholarship to attend the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Bernstein serendipitously came to the attention of NBA personnel while sitting in the public relations office of the Lakers in 1982. Conversations with NBA Properties put him in line for his first NBA job, which was photographing the 1983 All-Star Game at The Forum. He has covered 38 NBA Finals and 37 All-Star Games as the senior NBA photographer.

He has extraordinary technical knowledge, possesses the rare ability to see a world others cannot and captures it on film. Bernstein was instrumental in the development and use of new technology, both on and off the court, including the multiple camera Flash Wizard II system, which revolutionized indoor sports action photography by using triggers and remotes with strobe lighting.

Bernstein is a founding partner of a new media and events company called Legends Of Sport that celebrates legendary athletes, teams and moments in sports. Bernstein hosts a weekly podcast called “Legends Of Sport”, which can be found on Apple Podcasts. The platform and podcast can be followed on Twitter @lospodcastone, Instagram @legendsofsport and blog www.legendsofsport.blog.
