Dinner Meeting with Speaker Tyesa Harvey (Reception 5:45pm/Dinner 6:30pm)
September 17, 2019 @ 5:45 pm
The featured speaker for the San Marino City Club’s September 17, 2019 meeting is Tyesa Harvey, writer, speaker, and survivor of domestic sex trafficking.
Ms. Harvey is passionate about raising awareness and educating the public regarding sex-trafficking and sexual exploitation. Ms. Harvey herself experienced the childhood trauma of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse. She knows the depths of trauma inflicted by these heinous acts. Ms. Harvey provides her own testimony to educate and raise the awareness of the public with respect to the hardships of overcoming a past filled with so much heartache and terror. To break the chains of a lifestyle that held her hostage for so many years, Ms. Harvey has had to work through the fear and horrors of her past in order to transition in the world of normal society.
At the age of 13, Tyesa began living on the streets, which led her to her first trafficker at age 14. That man would introduce her to a lifestyle that provided the family she never had, but at a high cost – Tyesa had to sell her soul each night for it. After 16 years in that lifestyle, she gave birth to what she calls her “lifesavers,” boy/girl twins. Since then she has been on the path of saving herself in order to save them.
Ms. Harvey has spoken at many venues, including churches, schools, and law enforcement agencies. She has testified at the California State Capitol in front of the Senate, been interviewed for local television stations, and she has been featured in, “Shattered Dreams,” a sex trafficking documentary that has won several awards in film festivals.
Currently a student at Santa Monica Community College, Ms. Harvey will be transferring to UCLA in the fall. She is obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications/Public Relations. While completing her education, Ms. Harvey looks to start her own non-profit, a 12 month program with a 12-step curriculum designed to help victims/survivors reintegrate into society.
